Kajsa Dahlberg,
Following the Oceans of Cinema

“One of cinema’s greatest powers is its animism. On the screen there is no still life. Objects have attitudes. Trees gesture. Mountains, like this Etna, signify. Each element of staging becomes a character.”

Jean Epstein, “Cinema Seen from Etna” 1926.

My name is Kajsa Dahlberg and I’m a visual artist living in Oslo. My work is informed by queer life practices – its theories, and affinities. I work with a range of mediums, but for the past few years I’ve been engaged with thinking about the apparatus of film as not exclusively the product of human decisions, but also, in part, the product of the activity of agents other than ourselves. This process, or engagement, coincides with me doing a practice-based PhD at the Royal Institute of Art (Mejan) in Stockholm. I would like to use this opportunity to present a kind of mishmash of subcategories and loose ends that come out of this research. Digressions. Confusions, but hopefully also possibilities. I’d like to speak about the relationships between seaweed and film, suggest endosymbiotic theory and spiral dramaturgies as possible models for filmmaking, as well speculating in what the world had looked like if the history of film had followed the direction of Jean Epstein’s film "Le Tempestaire".
